In Remembrance of Jodie Milkman
Released November 4 2024
On behalf of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) Board of Directors and Staff, we share our profound sadness over the passing of our beloved Executive Vice President, Jodie Milkman. Jodie was more than an exceptional leader—she was the heart and soul of the Delaware River Waterfront for over 30 years. Her dedication to enhancing the lives of millions of residents and visitors in Greater Philadelphia was nothing short of extraordinary.
When Jodie faced an unexpected diagnosis of ovarian cancer in November 2022, her courage shone brighter than ever. Even as she navigated her own health challenges, she continued to lead with compassion and strength, inspiring our team to move forward with her characteristic passion. Events like the New Year’s Eve Fireworks and programs at the Independence Blue Cross RiverRink became more than moments of joy—they were part of her legacy, shaping memories for generations to come.
Beyond her title, Jodie was a mentor and friend to many, and a role model for women in business throughout Philadelphia. Her collaborative spirit united diverse groups toward shared goals, while her strategic vision transformed spaces like Cherry Street Pier and the Delaware River Trail. She championed programs that connected with the community, including the Good Skates Program, which provided free ice-skating lessons to Philadelphia public school students— a testament to her heart for service that extended beyond her professional duties, impacting numerous charitable causes and fostering a sense of community wherever she went.
Jodie’s leadership through the pandemic further illustrated her unwavering commitment and adaptability. She reimagined programming to ensure that families could safely enjoy the Waterfront, upholding the sense of community and joy she had always fostered. Her legacy of service, resilience, and excellence will continue to inspire DRWC and our broader community.
Above all, Jodie cherished her family. She was a devoted wife to Sam Milkman and a proud mother to Max, Ryan, and Sydney. Her love and devotion to her family were evident in every facet of her life.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we celebrate Jodie’s remarkable life and the lasting impact she has made on our community. In her honor, we will carry forward the work she loved and believed in, driven by the same passion and commitment she exemplified.
In the words of those who knew her, Jodie brought light and hope to the Delaware River Waterfront. We are committed to honoring her memory by building on her vision and dedication.
With deepest gratitude and respect,
Joe Forkin
President
Delaware River Waterfront Corporation
