Significant progress is underway on the Washington Avenue Connector as crews push through the winter to keep this important project moving forward.

Over the past few months, major upgrades have taken shape along the corridor between 4th Street and Columbus Boulevard, including:

  • Installed new drainage inlets and fire hydrants
  • Added new streetlights and pedestrian lighting to improve safety and visibility
  • Installed raised planters near Jefferson Square Park
  • Began early work on the future Gateway Plaza east of Water Street

Behind the scenes, crews also completed important groundwork to support the next phase:

  • Installed tree pits, lighting foundations, and underground infrastructure
  • Started rebuilding key roadway features, including the channelizing island between 2nd and Front Streets

Looking ahead, the focus shifts to greening the corridor. This spring and summer, crews will plant dozens of new trees and hundreds of shrubs, while continuing work on sidewalks, lighting, and traffic signals. Survey work will also begin for new curb bump-outs to improve safety at crossings.

Final paving and major roadway work are planned for mid-July, with the full project expected to wrap up in August 2026.

Once complete, the Washington Avenue Connector will create a safer, greener, and more welcoming connection between South Philadelphia and the Delaware River Waterfront.
