Delaware River Trail Extension Construction Begins in June.

The Delaware River Waterfront is taking another step toward a more connected trail network. Construction on the next segment of the Delaware River Trail, between Penn Treaty Park and the Battery, is scheduled to begin the week of June 15, 2026.

Once construction starts, the project is expected to take approximately three months, with completion anticipated by mid-September 2026. This new trail segment will help strengthen connections along the waterfront and improve access for walkers, runners, and cyclists.

As part of the project, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC), Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and contractor Mayfield Site Contractors have worked closely to protect one of the site's most important natural features: a large London Plane tree located near the trail alignment.

In May, crews conducted selective air spading at the planned boardwalk pile locations. This specialized process uses compressed air to carefully expose roots underground, allowing the project team to confirm that the boardwalk's helical piles can be installed without disturbing the tree's structural root system.

By balancing infrastructure improvements with environmental stewardship, the project will create a safer and more connected waterfront experience while helping preserve the landscape that makes the Delaware River Trail unique.
