Significant changes are underway along the Washington Avenue Connector to create a safer, more beautiful, and better-connected path to the Delaware River Waterfront.
Here’s what’s been completed so far and what’s coming next:
What’s Been Completed
-
Crews have installed electrical conduit under the roadway, which will power the new traffic signals along the Connector.
-
The City’s 2nd District Survey Unit has completed a detailed layout of the new street design.
-
Traffic, safety, and environmental plans have been finalized through field meetings with project partners, including SEPTA.
Transportation and Traffic Changes Coming Soon
-
Starting Monday, June 30, SEPTA Route 57 southbound bus stops along the slip lane between 4th Street and Moyamensing Avenue will be temporarily relocated to eastbound Washington Avenue, as indicated by posted signs.
-
The slip lane under I-95 (between Front Street and Water Street) will close to traffic in early July. This space will be used as a construction staging area for equipment and materials.
What to Expect This Summer
-
In early July, crews will install environmental controls throughout the construction zone and saw-cut pavement in preparation for sidewalk and roadway reconstruction.
-
Later in July, Electrical work begins in the eastbound right lane for new street lighting. Demolition and reconstruction will start on the south side of Washington Avenue. The right lane of eastbound Washington Avenue will close—and remain closed over multiple blocks through early fall.
We appreciate your patience as we work to improve the Washington Avenue Connector. This project represents a significant step toward creating a safer, greener, and more connected route to the Delaware River Waterfront for all Philadelphians.
