About the Flag:
This flag features a decorative pattern inspired by wallpaper from the artist’s archive. The design reflects how migrants use decoration and household items to express identity, culture, and a sense of home. Inspired by his Jewish grandmother, who fled Czechoslovakia in the 1930s and rebuilt her life elsewhere, the work honors the ways people carry pieces of their past into new places. The flag also connects to Philadelphia’s history as the first city in the United States to produce wallpaper.
About the Artist:
Edward Liddle’s artistic practice explores patterns, design, and visual details drawn from architecture, wallpaper, film, and television. Using hand-made techniques, he transforms these inspirations into sculptures and installations that examine everyday objects and mass production. His work combines research, experimentation, and play to create a distinct visual language.
