The Washington Avenue Connector continues to make significant progress and remains on track for substantial completion by the end of August 2026.
What’s Been Completed
In May, crews completed several major improvements along the corridor, including:
- New sidewalk and multi-use trail between Front Street and Columbus Boulevard on the south side of Washington Avenue
- Electrical conduit and foundations for new pedestrian and street lighting
- Installation of 66 new trees and hundreds of native shrubs and plants
- New corner bump-outs at Washington Avenue and 4th Street, 3rd Street, Moyamensing Avenue, and 2nd Street
- New traffic signal equipment and foundations for signal mast arms
Looking Ahead
During June, crews will focus on:
- Completing the asphalt multi-use trail and concrete sidewalks on the south side of Washington Avenue, allowing the public to begin using the new connection to the Delaware River Trail.
- Finishing concrete work at Columbus Boulevard, after which the long-term eastbound right-lane closure will be removed
- Completing new ADA ramps and pedestrian bump-outs along the north side of Washington Avenue
- Installing new traffic signal equipment at intersections between 4th Street and Front Street
Please note that temporary intersection closures may occur while signal work is underway.
What’s Next
Beginning around July 20, crews will start final roadway paving along Washington Avenue from 4th Street to Columbus Boulevard, including cross streets and portions of the slip lane. Additional work will include:
- New streetlights and traffic signal installations along the north side of Washington Avenue
- Final paving and pavement markings
- Installation of new signage
To help accommodate Philadelphia’s busy summer event season, final paving activities will continue through mid-August with intermittent lane and street closures. Punch-list items and final project closeout work will continue into the fall.
Once complete, the Washington Avenue Connector will create a safer, greener, and more welcoming connection between South Philadelphia and the Delaware River Waterfront.
