We’re making significant strides this fall as part of the ongoing improvements to Washington Avenue.

Here’s what’s been completed so far—and what’s coming up next—as we continue transforming this central corridor into a safer, more welcoming space for everyone.

What’s Already Done:
  • Safer Crossings: The southwest corner of Washington Avenue and South 4th Street now features brand-new ADA-accessible ramps, a protected bike lane, and a new pedestrian island, making crossing easier and safer.
  • Jefferson Square Gateway: We’ve replaced the old slip lane between 4th and 3rd Streets with a wider sidewalk and a 14-foot-wide multi-use path that leads to a refreshed entrance at Jefferson Square Park.
  • Let There Be Light: Foundations and conduit are in place for six modern LED streetlights and eight pedestrian lights to brighten the path along the park.
  • Clearing the Way: The existing island between S. 3rd Street and Moyamensing Avenue has been demolished to make room for new construction scheduled to begin in November.
Traffic + Transportation:
  • The eastbound right lane on Washington Ave. will stay closed as work continues east along the south side of the corridor.
  • A protected bike lane remains open adjacent to the work zone, allowing cyclists to ride safely.
  • Parking will be limited in active work areas between 3rd Street and Moyamensing Avenue.
  • The SEPTA Route 57 bus stop at Washington Ave and Moyamensing Ave has been temporarily relocated during construction.
Coming in November:
  • New sidewalks and multi-use path along the south side of Washington Ave. from 3rd Street to Moyamensing Ave
  • Larger pedestrian island with updated curb lines and space for future amenities
  • Eight tree pits will be excavated for new trees coming in Spring 2026
  • More LED lighting: four new streetlights and five more pedestrian lights
  • Sidewalk repairs near the slip lane from 3rd to Moyamensing

We appreciate your patience as we work to improve the Washington Avenue Connector. This project represents a significant step toward creating a safer, greener, and more connected route to the Delaware River Waterfront for all Philadelphians.
