Delaware River WATERFRONT

The Pennslyvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is replacing and expanding the existing covered section of I-95 at Penn’s Landing along the Delaware River Waterfront in Center City Philadelphia under the department’s $329 million I-95/CAP project. 

The project aims to connect Philadelphians back to its Waterfront through improved pedestrian and multi-modal connections between Center City and the Waterfront. Construction of a new 11.5-acre Park at Penn’s Landing (see renderings), and a new South Street pedestrian bridge are the two main components of this project.  

PennDOT recently shared a spring construction recap highlighting several construction milestones:

• In late 2023, crews removed the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge over Columbus Boulevard and the adjoining staircase and rotunda on the east side of the boulevard at Penn’s Landing. Please note that the best walking routes for visitors are now via South Street; Spruce Street, and Market Street to Columbus Boulevard.

• Following the demolition of the existing concrete cover, sheet pile shoring was installed along Front Street which will help support the new cap structure. Work on the Front Street abutment will continue into the fall.

Workers will continue the construction of support foundations for the new South Street pedestrian bridge that will extend the crossing from the existing terminus on the east side of I-95 to the east side of Columbus Boulevard. The bridge itself is being assembled on a vacated parking lot on Columbus Boulevard near South Street. It will be lifted into place once the assembly is completed. Review the full spring recap by PennDot here.
