The waterfront wins $710,000 in ArtPlace America grants

Earlier this week, the national organization ArtPlace America announced the winners of its 2013/2014 grants.  The Delaware River Waterfront received $710,000 in grants: $310,000 for DRWC to develop art centered programming for the Penn’s Landing Marina and $400,000 to FringeArts to build an outdoor plaza on the waterfront adjacent to their new building at the foot of Race Street.

Over the next year, The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) and its partners will transform the Boat Basin at Penn’s Landing into a “river stage” in order to activate public space and foster civic engagement to advance a future in which the waterfront becomes a cultural and economic center of activity. FringeArts will construct and activate an outdoor plaza and performance space to serve as a welcoming space for performance and socializing at its new location on Philadelphia’s waterfront.

Philadelphia was awarded more grants than any other city across the nation, totaling $1,195,150 to implement four projects in University City, Frankford, and the Delaware River waterfront. The projects were chosen from more than 1,200 applications as exceptional examples of creative placemaking.

Stay tuned for regular updates as DRWC begins the development and implementation of the project.

Race Street Pier Promenade

On Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 6-9pm, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will again host the Race Street Pier Promenade. The promenade will celebrate this spectacular park, which is one of the most exciting and new public spaces in Philadelphia. Funds raised from this special event will support arts programming that will enliven the waterfront and animate Race Street Pier. The event features fare from local restaurants coordinated by Ellen Yin, owner of Fork Restaurant, as well as cocktails, music, entertainment, and a Fireworks finale.
