The south segment of the Delaware River Trail (DRT) runs along the river between Washington Avenue Pier and Pier 68 (roughly between Washington Avenue and Pier 70 Boulevard) in South Philadelphia.
The trail segment was designed within the existing Delaware River Trail design guidelines and features a pedestrian and bicycle path, complemented by landscaping, solar lighting, and site furnishings. The pedestrian path is made of stone fines while the bi-directional bike path is constructed of asphalt pavement. Special concrete unit pavers are used to provide a visual and tactile change at pedestrian and bicyclist overlap areas. New landscaping frames the trail, replacing invasive volunteer plants with native trees, shrubs, and grasses. Lighting, seating, and trash receptacles ensure that the trail is safe and inviting. New fencing provides a barrier to the abandoned piers.
