About Lefty’s Deceiver
Lefty’s Deceiver is Andy Williams (guitar, vocals), Ed Hogarty (guitar), Kristine Kennedy (bass guitar) and Mike Kennedy (drums). Once discreetly characterized (and often dismissed) as “math rock,” LD is the powerful sonic expression of four longtime Philadelphia indie rock stalwarts. That have little left to prove, save that when they perform live they still throw down harder than rockers 20 years their junior.
In late 2017 Lefty’s Deceiver released their first new music in 14 years. Though the songs were recorded in 2014, singer/guitarist Andy Williams moved to Los Angeles shortly after, effectively suspending the band’s forward momentum. Mike Kennedy engineered the sessions and ultimately mixed the record in 2017.
Recorded in 2013/2014, the seven songs that comprise 2017’s s/t LP are the first ever written and recorded by the full 4-piece lineup. With Ed Hogarty’s departure from the band in 2001 to pursue playing in The Bigger Lovers (Yep Roc) full-time, Kristine Muller stepped in to take over duties on bass guitar. After a nearly 8-year hiatus, in 2011, Hogarty returned. The band re-formed as a 4-piece with Muller (now Kennedy because sometimes bassists and drummers need to marry) on bass and Hogarty on guitar.
A sporadic series of bombastic live shows and countless practices later, LD entered the studio in 2013 to engineer, produce and record their latest efforts. A departure from the math rock assemblages of their youth, LD composed these 7 songs with an unprecedented immediacy, eschewing complexity for hooks layered upon the familiar propulsive rhythm section that has always defined the band. It is a progression and a reminder lest you forget – this band was born in the ‘90’s.
Our Best is the anthemic cornerstone of the s/t LP It begins with a single repeating riff, slowly engulfed by the pulsing simplicity for which the band has become known. Think AC/DC meets a Guided by Voices-inspired minor chord progression, but within a matter of measures, becomes entirely Lefty’s Deceiver.
The s/t LP is LD’s 5th release. My Pal God Record released Process Junior and Cheats in 2001 & 2003 respectively. Conversations on Favored Nations in 2000 (HCNL Records) and 45:00 in 1999 (self-released) round out the discography.
The band continues to reunite for special events and collaborate proving that though the band may not be together, they’ve never broken up. To learn more about Lefty’s Deceiver follow them on Facebook and Twitter @leftysdeciever or stream their music at leftysdeceiver.bandcamp/com.
