Saturday Mar 01
USS Somerset, a warship honoring the brave crew and passengers of Flight 93, is set to be commissioned at Penn's Landing on March 1. The commissioning ceremony, which is being hosted by the Philadelphia Council of the Navy League, is a time-honored tradition dating from colonial times and marks a ship's entry into the naval fleet. The vessel commemorates the crew and passengers who thwarted a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, before the plane crashed in Somerset County, PA. It incorporates both a flight deck for helicopters and Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, and a well deck for landing craft and amphibious vessels. This commissioning marks the second time in four years that Penn's Landing has been the home of a commissioning.

The USS Somerset, which left New Orleans, LA, on Monday, February 3 is scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia on Feb. 21. USS Somerset joins USS New York and USS Arlington as the third vessel to be named after the heroes of 9/11. Designed to carry up to 800 U.S. Marines and sailors, it is the fifth ship to carry the Somerset name. The ship is much more than a namesake. The image of a U.S. Flag flying on a hill above the The steel from the crash site from a coal dragline is one of the strong images of the tragedy. The steel from the dragline’s bucket was melted down and became the bow stem. Additionally, the families of Flight 93 victims have donated coins and other mementos that were melted down to be part of the ship, similar to an ancient custom whereby shipbuilders put coins under a vessel's mast to pay for the crew's safe return.

More than 7,000 are expected to attend the 11 a.m. ceremony, which is already fully subscribed. Public tours are expected to be held following the March 1 ceremony. Times and other details will be available on the commissioning web site: www.usssomersetcommissioning.org.
